On receiving permission from Akashvani FM 100.6 MHz Mysuru, around 160 students of Department of Computer Science and Engineering were accompanied by two faculties, Ms. Roopashree S and Ms. Bhavya J, Assistant Professors, Dept. of CSE, T John Institute of Technology departed Bangalore at 7:00 am on 06th April, 2016 and reached Mysuru at 11:30 am.

Akashvani, Mysuru is an 80 year old station started by Mr. Gopalswamy and it’s been claimed that Narayana Kasturi coined the word Akashvani. The Akashvani programs are designed to target all age groups and some of the broadcasted programs are Geetharadhana, keli kali, yuva vani, chukki chinna and chinnthane. The list of Programs to be broadcasted would be scheduled two months prior and recorded in a Q-sheet. The Akashvani Mysore is accessible to Chamarjnagar, Mysuru, Mandya and parts of Ooty and kodaikanal.

Students were grouped into two batches; one batch was guided by Mr.Muralidar – Technician and the other by Mr. Ranjith – Sound Engineer, Akashvani, Mysuru.

The visit started with Music Studio; a room where walls were alternatively treated to get 60dB reflections within ‘3’ Seconds.  Here, Indian classical and folk songs were recorded and the microphones used were dynamic and condenser microphones. Dynamics microphones used for high level sounds and the condensers used for light sounds.

Further students were directed to recording room; a digital console used to balance the sounds of two different individuals. The maximum microphones used and controlled was 10. The sound recorded in .wav format and not any other format as it provides extreme sampling. The sound broadcasted at 85dB, a perfect sound pressure level for a human ear. Adobe audition and wave audio were the software used for recording and editing.

Then moved onto Talk Studio. Here, the entire wall and the ceiling were treated to reduce the reverberation time by 60dB within ‘1’ second. The microphones used in the talk studio were condenser microphones which record only low sounds, which otherwise would damage the microphones. Maximum of four individuals use the talk studio.

After talk studio, we were led to the editing suite or the dubbing suite. Ms. Bharathi was one of the announcer. A Swiss make console, Gramophones and old audio tapes were still used to broadcast old classical songs.

The next was control room consisting of switching console and satellite receivers.

Lastly, students were forwarded to transmitter hall which stocks a 10kW Harris transmitter. FM duplexer is used to switch between Akashvani and Gynanavani. The Gynanavani used to broadcast between 6 am to 10 am and 6pm to 10 pm.  All the signals broadcasted through an antenna which is 100 meters above the ground and has a range of 100-120 kilometers.

We all left the grounds of Akashvani around 2:00pm with the knowledge of Radio Transmission and Sound Engineering. This awareness led students to gather additional information and in addition a motivation to learn more on latest expertise used in Radio Station in Bengaluru.
